What Is The Somaek?

The Somaek is a bomb-shot cocktail made using Korean soju. It’s unknown when the Somaek was first created, but there isn’t much written about it till the mid-1990s. It most likely originated before the 1990s, and similar to the sake bomb, it was probably invented by the US Military stationed in Korea.

How To Make A Somaek

The recipe for a Somaek is simple enough. Make it the same way you would a boilermaker by combining a shot of soju with a pint of beer. The difference is how the drink is prepared. Heavily carbonated drinks are not very popular in Korea, and many drinks are either lightly carbonated or not carbonated at all. In the Somaek case, you remove the beer’s carbonation by banging a chopstick in the glass. After combining the soju and beer, stick a chopstick in the glass and tap it using the other chopstick. This will cause the beer to lose most of its carbonation. Be careful here because it’s easy to overflow the glass with the sudden rush of bubbles.
